About Me:
Combining his years of teaching and management experience along with a commitment to new technologies and passion for professional development, Nick was in an ideal position to help establish the organisation that was to become CORE Education, Ultralab South in April, 2003.

Having met Professor Stephen Heppell, a leading thinker in the technology and education field and director of Ultralab in the UK, Nick was inspired to establish a similar organisation in the southern hemisphere. His role within Ultralab South and CORE Education has evolved since then and he remains passionate about the role of CORE in making the learning and teaching experience more real and satisfying for all involved.

Being a certified geek, as only appropriate for his role at CORE, Nick can usually be found somewhere in New Zealand intensely muttering away into his mobile phone mic whilst simultaneously ichatting at least five other people, audio conferencing, passionately extolling the virtues of his latest favourite piece of software, and sending a couple of emails at the same time.

But seriously, the director of development role entails living a "a rather itinerant life”, travelling the country and beyond developing CORE’s business by establishing partnerships and project opportunities, as well as working to oversee the ECE ICT PL programme (Early Childhood Education, Information and Communication Technology Professional Learning) as well as several other CORE Education national projects - one of several of the Ministry of Education contracts that CORE currently manages.

When time permits Nick is a lover of the outdoors and enjoys the odd bout of walking, mountain biking, and kayaking or, when at a more leisurely pace, reading and movie watching. His peaceful existence can, apparently be “destroyed” when MS word becomes a menacing force and crashes his computer, however, tranquillity can easily be restored by

a) reading, walking, talking and thinking
b) enjoying a satirical take on political life or
c) watching a world class sporting event and
d) dreaming.

Hi Gail! Thanks for your comment! We did our best to synchronize audio/captions, but there are places where we just get constrained by the dotSub tools. There's something very interesting about your experience, that I hadn't realized before. In our countries, we get a lot of movies (and some TV shows these days) with Spanish subtitles. Seems to me, now, that we develop the skill to read those subtitles and synch them in our head with the English audio and the video. I might be wrong, but suddenly I'm thinking that's not a skill very developed in English speakers... Very interesting stuff.. I hope you got enough meaning from the presentation. In case you need it, I have the complete English script. I'll just upload it to the wiki site. Good suggestion that of having translation tools in the conference page. This is the first time we do this, so we're actually experimenting and learning along the way. :D By the way, I have the feeling this is the first discussion I have where the posts are both in English & Spanish, so I can see how useful could be what you propose. Hicimos lo mejor que pudimos para sincronizar el audio con los subtítulos, pero hay momentos en los que las herramientas de dotSub sencillamente nos limitan. Hay algo muy interesante sobre tu experiencia, que no había pensado antes. En nuestros países, recibimos muchas películas (y algunas series de TV en estos días) con subtítulos en Español. Me quedo pensando ahora que tal vez terminamos desarrollando la habilidad de leer esos subtítulos y sincronizarlos en nuestra cabeza con el audio en inglés y el video. Puedo estar equivocado, pero pienso de repente que esa puede ser una habilidad muy desarrollada en quienes hablan inglés... Muy interesante... Espero que hayas entendido la presentación lo suficiente. En caso de que lo necesites, tengo el texto completo en inglés. Lo publicaré en el wiki. Buena sugerencia la de contar con las herramientas de traducción directamente en el sitio web de la conferencia. Esta es la primera vez que hacemos esto, así que de hecho estamos experimentando y aprendiendo por el camino. :D Por cierto, creo que esta es la primera vez que participo en una discusión en inglés y español a la vez, así que puedo ver la utilidad de lo que propones. It is so interesting to hear people from all over the world communicating. I am curious to know exactly what type of assignments they do and how the other students from around the world may be critiquing a piece of writing or just having a conversation with other students. I believe those who are learning English in the Spanish speaking countries are doing great reaching out and communicating with real audience and having real people listening to what they have to say.

Few years ago I thought it was not as important to use all these new tools in the web but since the world is changing it is important for us as educators to change as well so that we give the students the skills they need in the future which is the use of web 2.0 tools. With so many fun tools in the web, I think we can always make it animated and grab the students’ attention by using it for instance voki or teach the students how to use it to make projects interesting and make the students develop their creativity.
